Peer Educator Class 30.6.16

9.15 am till 3.30 in St Kilda

This one day class looks at the reasons people wear their babies and how to help individuals find a suitable option. We will be discussing tips and tricks for teaching use of the most common carriers available. The class prepares people to volunteer as Peer Educators with Babywearing Victoria, or to work within other organisations to support babywearing. It is also useful for individuals who enjoy informally supporting babywearing within their own family or community.

By the end of this class you will be able to

  • understand what babywearing is
  • be familiar with the different styles and types of carriers currently available and popular in Australia
  • know how to explain the characteristics of a safe carry
  • teach a safe carry in a number of different carriers
  • discuss the difference between optimal positioning and safe wearing
  • be able to answer the most common questions about babywearing
  • understand the recent history of babywearing in Australia.

This class is suitable for

  • People who are interested in taking up a leadership role in their local babywearing group
  • Individuals who would like to expand their personal repertoire of carriers
  • professionals who are sometimes called to give advice to clients about babywearing choices
  • retailers who sell babywearing products

Please be aware that attendees who intend to volunteer as a Peer Educator for BVI will need to have their competencies signed off after the class. Not every person is suited to the role of educator, but every babywearer can benefit from the information provided in the class.
